What is Aurora Borealis?

The aurora borealis, or northern lights, is a natural light display caused by the interaction between solar wind particles and Earth's magnetic field. When charged particles from the Sun collide with gases in Earth's atmosphere, they emit light of various colors, creating the spectacular aurora we see in the night sky. The best viewing conditions occur during high geomagnetic activity (Kp 4+), clear skies, and dark nights away from light pollution.
